“Riding the Wind: How to Survive and Thrive in a Constantly Changing Publishing World”
A writer’s life is like no other; it is consumed with an imaginary world of characters, plots, and themes. However, if you want to sustain a long-term career, you have to maintain a dual focus on the craft of writing and the business of publishing.
This presentation will explore:
- My “paths untrodden” as a working author,
- Including the many personal and professional detours (some difficult; some delightful),
- As well as what I learned along the way,
- to hopefully inspire your journey.
Marty Ambrose Bio:
Marty Ambrose is an award-winning, multi-published author of nine novels, including her recent historical mystery, The Lost Dresses of Italy, published by Alcove Press, which is a dual narrative of two creative women: 19th-century poet, Christina Rossetti, and a 20th century fashion curator whose lives intertwine around a century-old conspiracy in Verona, Italy. This book recently won a gold medal for historical fiction with the Florida Writers Association.
Marty completed her M.Phil. at the University of York (England) and teaches composition and creative writing at Florida Southwestern State College. She has also given numerous workshops in the U.S. and abroad on all aspects of creating/publishing a novel; her new novel, The Secret Diary of Rome will be published by Joffe Books in April, 2026.
April 18, 2026 Poetry Slam Monthly Meeting

Before we know it, February will be over, March will have bloomed, and April fun will be here. Lori Swick, the VP of programming, has some fun lined up for us in April. BUT we need to prepare for it.
April is National Poetry Month. Let’s celebrate at our April 18th meeting with a poetry slam. A poetry slam is a competitive poetry reading that blends creative writing, theatrical performance, and audience participation.
- Poets will perform original pieces only, with no props or costumes, focusing on rhythm, emotion, and impact.
- Participants should be prepared to share one to three poems, depending on the number of performers and available time.
- Each reading will have a strict 3-minute time limit.
- The audience will judge performances based on content and stage presence.
- Certificates will be awarded to the first, second, and third-place winners.
- The first-place winner will receive a free lunch after the meeting at Cristof’s.
Whether you’re reading or judging, it will be a rollicking good time, so don’t miss it!
