How To Write a Memoir

By Mary Charles

Our June GCWA meeting will be a workshop on how to write a memoir by Mary Charles.

Mary’s career was consumed by the business of storytelling. She told the tales of the Fortune 500

companies who hired her to burnish their public images.

Then, when her parents were in their early 80s, each of them gave Mary a book, in the form of a

loose-leaf three-ring binder. Each contained the story of a life: mother’s life, father’s life. These

books were the least-expensive items her parents had ever given to her. But to Mary, they were

the most precious gifts they had ever bestowed. Realizing that every life is a rich and enduring

story, Mary began a personal project to tell the stories of her late husband, whose swashbuckling

life needed to be memorialized. After moving to SWFL, she began conducting memoir workshops

in her community of retirees.

Memories are the proof of a life, the substance of a life. To let those memories die is a shame.

Memoir is how lives endure.
